From Praise to Fury: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.

Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric

Administration officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.

“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.

Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release

However, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.

But a few are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to go on the offensive.

“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.

Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted

However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
