The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on this week.

Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while 501 were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he remained the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.

The message accused the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's remarks after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
