The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning points deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, securing the champions a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defence," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going onâmakes, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were presented with their championship rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
