The UK government has added an additional eleven further countries to its public advisory roster about the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This expanded advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only recently, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after several notable events such as the fatal loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Industrial alcohol is a harmful chemical often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for drinking.
Although it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.
However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.
Foreign Office representative the minister said that every traveler should recognize the signs of methanol poisoning.
"When you are having drinks in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"Should anything seems unusual, like a hangover that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – get medical help fast."
The complete register of countries noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
